Description
Alcohol inhibits the body’s anti-diuretic hormones (ADH), which help you reabsorb water from your kidneys (before urinating). Normally, those ADH levels keep constant and fluctuate up and down to allow the body to reabsorb water or excrete it as needed. However, after drinking alcohol, ADH levels drop very low levels –for unknown reasons—causing the body to excrete more water. This dehydrates the body. Think of this, one drink produces twice the volume in urine.
Drinking the amount of water needed to replace these lost fluids, would be a daunting task. Only 30-50% of water drank would get absorbed and likely far less as your bodies gastrointestinal (GI) tract is inflamed after a night of drinking alcohol. Inflammation can cause a decrease in the GI tracts ability to absorb fluid as well as vital nutrients and vitamins.
